AMS 4965 – Ti-6Al-4V Titanium Bars, Wire, Forgings & Rings (Solution Heat Treated & Aged)

Overview

AMS 4965 covers Ti-6Al-4V (6Al-4V) supplied as bars, wire, forgings, and flash-welded rings in the solution heat treated and aged (STA) condition. With high strength-to-weight, stable alpha-beta microstructure, and excellent toughness, AMS 4965 is widely used for aerospace and high-performance industrial hardware.

Why Engineers Choose AMS 4965

  • High specific strength → STA heat treatment delivers elevated tensile & yield properties for weight-critical designs

  • Consistent microstructure → tight control of alpha-beta phase for predictable performance

  • Excellent corrosion resistance in marine and chloride environments

  • Multiple forms: bar, wire, rings, and forging stock for near-net manufacturing

Mechanical Performance (Solution Treated & Aged)

  • Ultimate Tensile Strength: approx. 130–165 ksi (depends on size/heat lot)

  • Yield Strength (0.2%): approx. 120–155 ksi

  • Elongation: approx. 6–10%

  • Reduction of Area: approx. 20–25%

Use supplied MTRs for final design values; properties vary with section, orientation, and processing route.

Product Forms & Size Range

  • Round Bar & Wire – small & medium diameters for high-strength fasteners, linkages, shafts

  • Flash-welded Rings – for rotating aerospace hardware

  • Closed-die Forgings – near-net shapes for structural / rotating parts

  • Forging Stock – supplied for downstream open/closed-die operations

Quality & Acceptance (Per Purchase Order)

  • Chemical composition and microstructure verification

  • Tensile testing in specified orientations

  • Surface contamination controls for titanium processing

  • Fracture toughness / NDT (UT) per drawing or PO requirements

Applications

  • Aerospace – airframe joints, actuators, landing gear elements, rings/rotor components

  • Defense – high-strength linkages and housings

  • Motorsport – hubs, drivetrain, suspension, lightweight rotating hardware

  • Energy & Marine – corrosion-resistant hardware in weight-sensitive systems

AMS 4965 vs Related Specifications

SpecCondition / FormWhere It Fits
AMS 4965Ti-6Al-4V, STA; bars, wire, forgings, ringsHighest strength range for weight-critical rotating/structural parts
AMS 4928Ti-6Al-4V, annealed; bars, wire, forgings, ringsBalanced ductility/formability; machining & hot forming before later heat treat
AMS-T-9047Historic Ti alloy specReference for legacy prints; often superseded

Rule of thumb: AMS 4965 for maximum strength in finished parts; AMS 4928 when parts require machining/forming before heat treat.

Fabrication Notes

  • Weldable by TIG/EB with strict shielding and cleanliness; post-weld heat treat per process plan

  • Machining requires sharp tooling, proper coolant, and controlled speeds to manage heat & work-hardening

  • Forming/forging must follow temperatures suitable for alpha-beta alloys; avoid oxygen pickup
