AMS 2630 — Ultrasonic Inspection for Thick Metal Products

AMS 2630 defines pulse-echo ultrasonic testing (UT) requirements for metallic products ≥ 0.50 in (12.7 mm) in thickness or cross-section, using contact or immersion methods and longitudinal and/or shear waves to detect internal discontinuities. The standard can also apply to finished parts when size, contour, structure, and thickness meet baseline testability.

What Does AMS 2630 Cover?

  • Products: flat, rectangular, round, cylindrical, and contoured sections over 0.50 in (12.7 mm) thick

  • Ultrasonic method: pulse-echo, using contact or immersion coupling

  • Wave modes: longitudinal (volumetric screening) and shear (planar-flaw sensitivity)

  • Finished parts: permissible when geometry allows full sound entry and evaluation

Primary keyword: AMS 2630

Test Methods Under AMS 2630

Contact Ultrasonic Inspection

  • Used when only one surface is accessible, or for large plates, bars, forgings, or field testing

  • Setup: handheld or mechanized probe with couplant; calibrated using approved reference blocks

  • Advantages: flexible, fast, minimal equipment footprint

  • Consideration: consistent coupling and controlled probe pressure are required for clean signals

Immersion Ultrasonic Inspection

  • Used for highest repeatability, finer detectability, and complex profiles

  • Setup: part submerged in water; transducer scans with controlled index and positioning

  • Advantages: excellent coupling, small defect detection, precise mapping and recording

Wave Modes Specified by AMS 2630

Longitudinal Waves

  • Deeper penetration and rapid volumetric screening

Shear Waves

  • Higher sensitivity to planar flaws such as cracks or lack-of-bond conditions

Often used together for full coverage.

Calibration, Sensitivity & Equipment (Overview)

  • Reference standards: FBH, SDH, or artificial reflectors as defined by drawing/PO

  • Sensitivity set to required reflector amplitude; document transfer corrections when substitutes are used

  • Scan plan: 100% of required zones; controlled index and scan speeds to avoid skip or dead areas

  • Couplants: qualified for material and temperature, maintaining stable transmission

  • Traceability: record probe IDs, frequency, gain settings, reference responses, and part IDs

Acceptance & Disposition

  • Indications evaluated against reference levels defined by drawing or PO

  • Reports include part ID, scan maps, instrument setup, calibration data, indication sizes/locations, and pass/fail status

  • Nonconformance: re-scan, alternate wave mode, immersion check, or engineering review

Choosing the Right Ultrasonic Standard

SpecificationBest Used When
AMS 2630Sections - 0.50 in; longitudinal + shear; contact or immersion
AMS 2632Thin sections ≤ 0.50 in or parts with different UT requirements
AMS 2631 & othersSpecific product forms or enhanced UT acceptance levels

Tip: Rings, thin plates, or small geometries may require AMS 2632 instead of AMS 2630.

Industries & Typical Applications

  • Aerospace: bars, plate, billet, and forgings for rotating and structural components

  • Energy & Oil/Gas: heavy-wall components and pressure-critical stock

  • Medical & Industrial: high-reliability metallics requiring internal soundness
