ASTM B338 is the standard specification for seamless and welded titanium and titanium alloy tubes used in surface condensers, evaporators, and heat exchangers. These tubes combine outstanding corrosion resistance with an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, making them ideal for power generation, chemical processing, and marine cooling systems.
Covers 28 titanium and titanium alloy grades including Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 3, Grade 5, Grade 7, Grade 9, Grade 11, Grade 12, and Grade 23.
Available as seamless or welded tubes, with welded tubes cold-worked to refine the weld microstructure.
Used extensively in industrial cooling, desalination plants, chemical reactors, and power plant condensers.
Note: “ASME SB-338” is the ASME-approved version of ASTM B338 for code-compliant applications; “ASTM 338” is often used as shorthand in industry.
Exceptional corrosion resistance: Performs in seawater, chlorides, and oxidizing environments.
Lightweight & high strength: Up to 45% lighter than stainless steel with comparable mechanical performance.
Thermal efficiency: Maintains strength at elevated temperatures in heat exchangers and condensers.
Longevity & low maintenance: Reduces downtime and replacement frequency in demanding applications.
| Grade | Key Property | Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Grade 1 | Commercially pure titanium with excellent corrosion resistance | Evaporators, marine condensers, desalination units, heat exchangers |
| Grade 2 | Good balance of corrosion resistance and moderate strength | Chemical plants, industrial piping, pressure vessels, process equipment |
| Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) | High-strength alloy with excellent fatigue and heat resistance | Aerospace, offshore oil & gas, power generation equipment |
| Grade 7 | Palladium-stabilized alloy for enhanced resistance in reducing acids | Pickling lines, chemical reactors, brine systems |
| Grade 12 | Superior corrosion resistance in hot or highly acidic environments | Heat exchangers, marine systems, process lines, high-temperature brine |
Tip: Always match grade selection with process fluid, temperature, and pressure conditions.
